Surgical treatments
Three approaches. A recommendation guided by your diagnosis and needs.
Standard surgical excision treats many skin cancers by removing the lesion with a predetermined margin of surrounding skin. The diagnosis, location, size, and risk characteristics guide treatment selection; certain higher-risk tumors may be better suited to Mohs surgery.
Cysts, lipomas, and selected other benign growths may be removed when they are symptomatic, enlarging, irritated, or otherwise appropriate for treatment. Not every benign lesion needs removal. Coverage depends on the indication and your insurance plan.
This in-office technique uses curettage to scrape away a lesion and electrodessication to treat the remaining tissue. It may be appropriate for selected superficial skin cancers and certain other lesions, depending on the diagnosis, location, and tumor characteristics.
Treatment selection
Not every skin cancer requires Mohs surgery, and not every growth requires treatment. Your recommendation is individualized to the diagnosis, location, size, symptoms, risk characteristics, and your needs as a patient.
Some higher-risk or anatomically sensitive skin cancers may be better treated with Mohs micrographic surgery.
